SKINS... A Journey of Exploration

I'm thrilled to delve into one of my most extensive and personal abstract series, 'Skins.' This collection of mixed-media artworks explores the captivating world of circular patterns. Each piece starts with a subtle base and then takes on a unique life of its own through the application of various artistic techniques.

'Skins' has a fascinating two-part origin story. The first iteration debuted in a solo exhibition of the same name. This initial collection laid the groundwork for the concept and piqued the interest of collectors who desired custom pieces. Fueled by the enthusiastic response, I embarked on a second chapter of the theme, creating bespoke works that catered to the specific visions of my audience.

A Shape of Colour and Symbolism

The recurring cylindrical form in 'Skins' transcends mere aesthetics. Perhaps it represents the layers we all possess – the masks we wear, the experiences we hold close, and the stories etched into our being. As light interacts with the impasto lines, these cylinders might appear to shift and morph, hinting at the complexities that lie beneath the surface. Imagine each cylinder as a unique facet of our identity, constantly evolving and influenced by the world around us.

The colour palette of 'Skins' plays a crucial role in conveying its message. By exploring this spectrum of hues, my intention was to invite the viewers to engage with the emotional undercurrents of the series. A vibrant red cylinder of 'Kirkos' might symbolize passion, while the blue shades of 'The Courtyard' evoke a sense of tranquility. The interplay of colours allows viewers to connect with the artwork on a deeper level, fostering a personal and unique interpretation.

The Foundation of Texture

Throughout 'Skins,' I gravitated towards the impasto technique. It involves applying thick layers of paint medium to create a textured effect. The textural lines adds a layer of depth and intrigue to the circular patterns, inviting viewers to explore the intricacies within each piece. The technique isn't merely decorative; it becomes a vital element in conveying the theme's message.

One of its defining characteristics is its embrace of mixed media. I incorporated various materials like gap fillers and industrial paints into these works. I also improvised tools to create rich tapestry of lines and textural elements. Experimenting with mediums and tools allows me to achieve a level of expression that would be impossible to attain with paint alone.

A Series that Provokes Introspection

'Skins' is more than just a visual spectacle; it's an open-ended exploration that invites introspection. It doesn't dictate a single interpretation. Instead, the series invites viewers to project their own experiences and emotions onto the canvas. The impasto lines and layered cylinders become a springboard for self-discovery, prompting us to consider the multifaceted nature of our identities. Perhaps a viewer sees the layers as representing past experiences, while another interprets them as aspirations for the future. It's a series that I revisit often, and I'm always eager to see where the next piece will take me. The beauty of 'Skins' lies in its ability to resonate with each viewer on a personal level.

I hope this blog post has given you a taste of the 'Skins' series. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about my work, please don't hesitate to contact me.
